PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council will have a proclamation on the agenda tonight to possibly recognize the 75th anniversary of the publication of the book “Dianetics” by L. Ron Hubbard.
Hubbard was the founder of the Church of Scientology.
The city says the proclamation was submitted by the L. Ron Hubbard Foundation’s public relations director.
It was modified by the city to focus on the anniversary of the book being published instead of the religious themes and would recognize March 13 as its publication date. March 13 was Hubbard’s birthday and the book was published on May 9, 1950.
The city removed sentences that called Hubbard’s work as “pioneering.”
The only Church of Scientology in west Michigan is in Battle Creek.
