KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Protests are being conducted nationwide this weekend, including one in Kalamazoo, over what some are calling the “Trial of the Century”.
21-youngsters are suing the Trump Administration claiming that their stance on climate change is threatening the plaintiff’s Constitutional rights to life, liberty and property, and that the White House is are failing to protect essential resources in the public trust.
Some say it follows in the grand mold of the Scopes Monkey Trial, which argued the scientific validity and teaching of evolution.
The Trump Administration has been doing everything it can to derail the suit which was originally due to be heard last February, and rescheduled for Monday in Oregon.
The Justice Department has secured a temporary stay of the hearing from the Supreme Court, claiming it would do “irreparable harm to the government” if they lost the case.
If they lost, the Federal government would be required to come up with a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Such planning was a regular feature of the U.S. government before the Trump Administration came along.
Coal burning and other plants were required to reduce emissions, automakers were required to do the same and the air is cleaner as a result. The Trump administration has been trying to rollback those requirements.
60 or more protests are being staged this weekend across the country protesting the delays and demanding that a hearing be held.
Advocates for the suit and their supporters plan to be in Bronson Park Sunday Afternoon at 3:00 pm for a local rally.
