KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The football stadium at Kalamazoo Central High School should have artificial turf by this fall.
Trustees voted to spend $3.4 million on stadium improvement last night. They say the turf is more durable than natural grass and will permit the schools to host not only football, but soccer, lacrosse and other sports in front of the grandstands, with less wear and tear on the playing surface.
Chief financial officer Laura Kayser says other improvements are planned.
Audio PlayerBoard vice president Carol McGlinn says Loy Norrix High School’s football field will get similar upgrades.
Audio PlayerMost other high schools in the conference already have artificial turf.
The money is coming from a bond issue approved by voters in 2022, after several community meetings over the issue of turf versus grass.
