KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Facing a Friday deadline, the City of Kalamazoo will forego a $92,000 grant from the Justice Department to buy lab and video equipment because the Trump administration has attached too many strings to the cash.
Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain says the agreement included half a dozen pages requiring the city to adhere to certain policies on immigration that they had never seen before.
City Commissioners found that objectionable.
They adopted a policy in July that specifically said they would not participate or fund any activity that might lead to the separation of immigrant children from their families
The Commission had tentatively set a special meeting for Thursday to reconsider the grant, but that meeting has now been cancelled and the deadline will pass Friday without the city’s approval.
