CASSOPOLIS (WKZO AM/FM) — Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says they almost lost one of their deputies just before the holidays because of a drunk driver.
Deputies pulled over a 31-year-old man from Dowagiac for speeding on M-51 late Saturday night. They discovered the car had been stolen from Hartford and that the driver was a felon in possession of meth and a firearm.
While they were on the side of the road investigating that case, a passing motorist failed to move over, striking the door of a county squad car, missing a deputy by inches. The driver did not stop.
A Tribal Police officer at the scene gave chase and arrested the driver.
47-year-old Spencer Mourning of Dowagiac has since been charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and leaving the scene of an accident.
Both suspects will likely be spending Thanksgiving in the Cass County Jail.
