KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — An early morning fish fry in an eastside apartment complex turned into an apartment fire early Saturday morning.
The fire was reported just after 6am after a smoke alarm sounded at the unit in the 2300 block of Inverness Lane off Gull Road just east of Ascension Borgess.
The first Officers on the scene found the entire first floor of the apartment on fire. The occupant told investigators that she was frying fish on the stove and briefly went upstairs.
That’s when the smoke detectors went off, she ran downstairs and found heavy smoke and the kitchen on fire.
. Arriving firefighters began evacuating other units in the New Village Park Apartments building but firefighting efforts were able to contain the damage to that one apartment.
There were no injuries.
They say it should be a reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors and a functioning fire extinguisher.
