LAWTON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 14, 2025) – It has been just over two months since the presidential election, and thoughts of the 2026 gubernatorial vote are already on the minds of some in Lansing.
State Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt of Lawton will seek the Republican nomination for the Chief Executive’s post. He has emerged as one of the leading GOP spokesmen on state and sometimes federal policy, and he told Grand Rapids-based WOOD-TV on Monday that he is entering the race early in order to generate more name recognition statewide.
Nesbitt joins outgoing Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan as announced candidates for Governor, although Duggan is initially planning to run as an independent. Democrat Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited out of office in 2026, and some political pundits feel that she could be angling for a possible presidential run in 2028.
