KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A preliminary investigation into Friday’s train derailment in downtown Kalamazoo suggests it was a repeat of the derailment of last summer.
Grand Elk Officials say if a train is made up of full and empty cars, the distribution of those cars can cause some buckling when the cars are pushed around curves, sometimes causing them to pop off the rails.
Eight cars derailed this time. There were no injuries, but there was some damage to fencing near a commercial building.
There were no hazardous materials involved this time, but there is always that concern that the next time, there might be.
The incident tied up traffic downtown Friday night, blocking Kalamazoo and Michigan Avenues for a while.
Walbridge and Harrison north of East Kalamazoo remained blocked though the night and into early Saturday morning.
