UNDATED (WKZO-AM) — Gas prices have spiked 35 cents over the holiday weekend in much of Michigan.
It’s the second time in week that gas prices have leapt higher.
Patrick Dehaan with GasBuddy.com says the jump is due to an increase in Michigan’s gas tax to raise more money for road construction, combined with OPEC’s threatened production cuts.
Many stations went up to $2.59 overnight. That’s about 30 cents above the national average and about 65 cents higher than where we were on this date a year ago, when gas was under $2 a gallon.
Only a little over seven cents a gallon was due to the higher state gas tax. DeHaan said the price of a barrel of crude has jumped $11 in the past month.
He says the change in administration could have some impact, but not immediately, even though the Trump administration may be the biggest supporter of oil and gas to ever be elected to the White House.
The average price for a gallon of regular in Kalamazoo early Tuesday was $2.56.
