PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) –Some of the money that the FireKeepers Casino in Calhoun County pays to the state through its tribal gaming compact will be repurposed for a use some may find controversial.
The money will be sent to a group that will partially focus on eliminating offensive high school mascots in the State of Michigan, particularly offensive ones like “Redskins”.
A pool of half a million dollars will be maintained on an annual basis to fund the efforts, which will also be spent on projects that “promote positive relationships with and understanding of the history and role of Michigan’s Indian tribes…in the state.”
Jamie Stuck, the Tribal Chair of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi tells MIRS news that as far as they know, no other tribe in the state has this kind of arrangement in their state compact.
The amendments also change the agreement for funding to local governments, allowing more flexibility and permission to fund multi-year projects.
