NEWBURG TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — A freak accident in Cass County has claimed the life of a teenager who was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a tree fell on a pick-up truck passing by on M-40 near Harvey Street.
16-year-old Nicholas Hewitt of Lansing was a passenger in the pick-up driven by 52-year-old Michael Rinehart, also of Lansing.
The unusual collision occurred at about 6:35 Wednesday morning.
The falling tree smashed into the cab of the truck and sent the pickup careening off the pavement and into a cluster of trees along the side of the road.
Rinehart is being treated for his injuries at Three Rivers Hospital. Hewitt was dead at the scene.
