LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox has formed a committee to examine running for governor.
The Republican says he’s “not goofing around” with his exploratory committee. Cox says he will make his decision on running in 2026 early next year.
He says Michigan is a “mess” right now, saying the state is fourth worse for illiteracy, 42nd in education, and seventh-highest for unemployment.
An attorney by trade, Cox has been in private practice since a failed bid for the 2010 GOP gubernatorial nomination, in which he finished third behind eventual eventual Governor Rick Snyder and former Holland Congressman Pete Hoekstra. Some political observers felt at the time that Cox and Hoekstra negated each other, allowing the then-unknown Snyder to secure the nomination.
Cox has run a series of ads in recent years citing his US Marine Corps background in soliciting his services to Marines who may have been affected by the Camp Lejeune water contamination case.
