KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo will mark the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday with a number of presentations, lectures, convocations, marches and Monday’s day of service.
There have already been smaller events held. The Northside Ministerial Alliance held their 31st-annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at Mt. Zion Church on Sunday. The house was packed for the commemoration ceremony.
On Monday, hundreds of volunteers Appeared at City Hall before daybreak to receive one day assignments to help out at local non-profits and charities, providing a number of services and tackling projects to help out those organizations.
Kalamazoo Valley Community College is planning a celebration at 11 a.m. in the Student Commons at the Texas Township campus. Kalamazoo College will hold its annual Convocation at Stetson Chapel at 10:50 a.m.
A number of events are planned at Western Michigan University. There will be speeches, lectures and meetings featuring a number of activist and civil rights organizations at the Bernhard Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The March from the flagpoles on campus to Martin Luther King Jr. Park downtown will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Bronson and Borgess hosptials will jointly sponsor a community party for the marchers right after the rally at MLK park concludes, and anyone else who wants to attend from about 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., giving everyone a chance to warm up with hot chocolate at the Radisson Hotel downtown.
