KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The city of Kalamazoo says around 2,900 lead service lines remain in the city.
That’s according to a new city report.
“There’s another 7,000 where we don’t know what the material is made of,” Public Services Director James Baker said.
Baker said the city began replacing the lines in 1992, but have recently sped the process.
“The overall scope of what we’ve been doing started to change right around the same time the Flint disaster was going on,” Baker said.
He says he problem lines can be found throughout the city.
“There are increases of density in the areas that were built out in 1900 through 1920,” Baker said.
Around 120 lines were replaced last year.
