KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners will hold a public hearing on their 2025 budget tonight and the bottom line is way up from the typical city budget, mostly because of hikes in state and federal funding.
It’s not just leftover dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act, but from a variety of construction projects, to rebuild downtown streets and tens of millions for water and wastewater upgrades.
Mayor Dave Anderson says the budget has a lot of capital investment.
He asked the big question – are those federal dollars secure, given the changes taking place in Washington.
Finance director Stephen Vicenzi says he thinks so, noting the money is obligated to be paid by the federal government and typically they don’t claw back that funding.
But he says that money isn’t in the bank. The federal government reimburses communities after the fact, and not up front.
The public hearing is at the top of tonight’s 7 p.m. agenda at City Hall.
