PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Scammers are “spoofing” Portage homeowners into giving them credit card numbers and other personal information by pretending to be working for the school district.
The phone rings, and caller ID will tell you that the call is coming from Portage Public Schools and even provide you with a number used by the district. Soon after the victim answers, they are given a quick reason and asked for their credit card information.
Both the police and schools want you to know that the district will never ever ask you for your credit card information over the phone.
They want to warn all residents that caller ID can no longer be trusted to be accurate, and that the residents should never give their personal information over the phone to anyone they do not know.
Portage Public Safety wants hear from anyone who was tricked and gave the caller their information.
