KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — It began with a routine traffic stop and escalated into criminal charges against both occupants of a car that was pulled over early Saturday.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers spotted a speeding car on Douglas near Patterson just after 4 a.m. and were able to catch up after the driver turned onto Ravine Road. Officers determined that the driver, a 28-year-old woman, appeared to be intoxicated. She refused officer commands to get out of the car. When she finally did, they arrested her for resisting and obstructing and driving drunk.
A computer check of the 27-year-old passenger turned up outstanding warrants for both a misdemeanor and a felony.
They found a handgun under his seat, and will seek a warrant from the prosecutor charging the man with carrying a concealed weapon. They were both booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail pending arraignment.
