PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Today is Black Friday, although the meaning of that has changed over the years and now many retailers have been offering Black Friday deals all week if not all month.
Tomorrow is still the one-and-only “Shop Local Saturday,” begun to promote holiday sales at local merchants, restaurants and businesses in the area.
It’s very important in Portage, which is one of the region’s retail hubs, so much so that the city council approved a resolution supporting it at their last meeting.
Here is councilmember Nichole Miller.
Local businessman Mark Nieuwenhuis read the resolution, which emphasized that shopping locally not only helps those businesses, but the entire community and its residents as well.
He is the co-owner of Turbo Chicken and he says money spent here is more likely to stay here.
They may have set aside a special day, but local retailers will also be happy to get your business any day in the run up to Christmas.
There may still be some special deals on Cyber Monday, but that’s another shopping holiday that has become more diffuse over the years.
