BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Democratic state Representative Jim Haadsma of Battle Creek has requested a hand recount in his loss to Republican Calhoun County commissioner Steve Frisbie.
The GOP challenger had nearly 1,400 more votes than Haadsma in the initial and unofficial count, and the Calhoun County clerk then realized they had around 2,800 absentee ballots from Battle Creek that hadn’t been counted.
Frisbie held the lead after those were counted, but only by about 60 votes.
Republicans won a majority of state House seats in the election.
