KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Residents in the Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Park impacted by the May 7th tornado have gotten an early Christmas present.
The Kalamazoo County board fast tracked $167,000 in unspent ARPA funding to make repairs to the homes damaged by the twister.
Commissioner Jen Strebs says mobile homes are not required to have insurance, and many there were not covered.
County Housing Director Mary Balkema says their grant will be blended with two others to provide the total costs. She asked for quick action because temperatures are dropping.
The board also talked about using unspent relief money to fund Metro-link bus transportation for residents at Pavilion Estates.
Strebs says many lost their cars to the tornado.
Staff was directed to hammer out the details with Metro Transit and the township.
The county is rushing to find ways to spend COVID-19 relief dollars that are unallocated with the deadline looming on December 31st.
More homes were destroyed and damaged in Pavilion Township than in Portage or Texas Township.
