KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have given preliminary approval to new water and wastewater rate hikes for first reading.
Utilities director James Baker says this won’t be the last hike.
In fact, city utility customers saw their rates double in the five years before 2022, and could see them double again in the not to distant future.
Baker says his staff have been able to avoid even higher rates by raising money in other ways.
Kalamazoo may be only the 20th largest city in Michigan, but its water and wastewater system is the 5th largest in the state, because it’s a regional system, and the largest in the state that relies only on groundwater as its source.
City commissioners will take a final vote on the rate hikes December 2nd.
