LANSING — A move is afoot at the state capital to expand Michigan’s bottle deposit law. Senate Bills 1112 and 1113, introduced by Sen. Sean McCann (D-Kalamazoo), is new legislation – introduced this week – that would increase the types of beverages and containers covered by the return law. It would also require all stores that sell those returnable beverages to accept all returns.
The legislation would also change how unclaimed bottle deposit funds are used by the state. The bills aim to make all beverages containers, including water, returnable but with some exceptions, including milk containers, baby formula containers, frozen storage containers and containers of fruit or vegetable juice 1/2 gallon or larger.
