BIG RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo man has died while apparently trying to escape a sheriff’s department transport van in Mecosta County last month.
Mecosta County Sheriff Brian Miller says 25-year-old Tylor Lee Ormsbee died from injuries sustained in his jump from the vehicle. He was being contained in a rear compartment of the sheriff’s office transport van taking him to the state prison intake facility in Jackson.
His attempted escape happened at 7:40 a.m. October 24 on U.S. 127 in Gratiot County. He died three days later in the hospital under intensive care. His father told 9&10 News his son sustained multiple broken bones and road rash, suffering brain swelling while hospitalized.
Ormsbee had been sentenced to prison for a probation violation. State records listed him as an absconder from probation and he was recently sentenced.
Michigan State Police and the Michigan Sheriff’s Association’s are both conducting investigations into the incident.
