BOWLING GREEN, OH (WKZO AM/FM) – The Western Michigan University football team dropped its second-straight mid-week game, falling 31-13 at Bowling Green Tuesday.
WMU (5-5, 4-2 MAC) scored early in the second quarter on a six-yard run by Jalen Buckley to take a 7-3 lead. On the ensuing kickoff BGSU muffed the kickoff and the Broncos took over on the BGSU 37. WMU went backwards and was forced to punt.
Bowling Green responded with a 6-play, 84-yard scoring drive capped off by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Connor Bazelak to Harold Fannin Jr to push ahead 10-7. The Falcons didn’t trail from then on.
The Falcons scored again with 4:02 left in the second quarter on a quarterback sneak by Bazelak to put BGSU up 17-7 at the half.
Bowling Green scored twice more in the third quarter to take a 31-7 lead before WMU answered with 0:03 left in the quarter on Buckley’s second touchdown of the game. WMU went for two but Hayden Wolff’s pass was broken up in the endzone.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Buckley had a team-high 73 yards on 15 rushes and had his third multi-touchdown game of the season. Zahir Abdus-Salaam had a career-high nine receptions for 59 yards and set a new career-high with 22 receptions on the season. Jacob Wahlberg had a team-high nine tackles and one tackle for loss.
The Broncos head to Mount Pleasant next Tuesday for the annual Battle for the Cannon. They need one more win to become bowl eligible.
