KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo city commissioners have added a late item onto their agenda for Monday night.
They plan to adopt a resolution supporting Kalamazoo Public Schools in their bid to keep Washington Writers’ Academy and the Woodward School for Technology and Research open after repeated low test scores put both schools on a list for possible closure.
Gov. Rick Snyder’s School Reform Office has not said when it will be announcing which of 38 schools on the list will actually be required to stay shuttered. On Thursday, Supt. Michael Rice announced his district would be filing a lawsuit this week, challenging the authority of the office to close schools.
He says closure would force students to attend other schools out of their neighborhood and perhaps outside the community, where they would lose eligibility for the Kalamazoo Promise college tuition program.
The Kalamazoo County Commission has already approved a similar resolution and other communities may also be asked to consider taking a stand on the issue.
