KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public, Gull Lake, and the Climax Scotts school districts are cancelling classes Friday to let flu-like symptoms run their course without spreading the virus any further.
Over 1,900 students either called in sick or had to be sent home with symptoms Thursday in the Kalamazoo alone. Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. David Davenport said he isn’t sure if it’s the flu, norovirus or both, and isn’t ready to say why it’s spiking right now.
Kalamazoo County health officials are speculating this recent warm spell may have contributed to the spread of norovirus, but they haven’t run enough tests to say for certain.
Kalamazoo Public Schools spokesperson Alex Lee said the three-day weekend will give everyone a chance to get over the bug, and give them a chance to sanitize the buildings.
