PAW PAW (WKZO-AM/FM) — Junior Fred Blackston of Bangor has been given a 25-year-sentence for a drug related execution about 30 years ago, but could go free in about four years.
It has been a long and tangled prosecution, including three men who have repeatedly changed their stories and allegiances, have been tried and retried, but it appears they finally have it all sorted out. The question is still out just how well justice has been served.
A jury found Carl Guy Simpson not guilty during his retrial earlier this month, despite testimony from Blackston that Simpson was there and participated in the 1988 shooting death. The jury found him not guilty.
Blackston was sentenced this week. Because he has shown remorse, cooperated with authorities and testified, he will serve 25 years, but with credit for 17 years he has already served.
