GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Some business owners are worried about the new paid sick time law that is set to take effect in February.
Restaurant owners like Cindy Lotterman-Schneider say more of them will close as a result of being required to allow at least 72-hours of paid sick time a year if they have over ten employees.
Labor groups like the new law, while the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce says it is worrisome.
Vice president of government affairs Joshua Lunger says his biggest fear is how the law will impact small businesses, noting the hospitality area in particular has had a very difficult past five years.
He says it will also allow people to “no-call no-show” without repercussions.
The Michigan Supreme Court ruled this summer that the Legislature’s actions in 2018 to “adopt and amend” ballot petitions raising minimum wage and requiring paid sick time were unconstitutional. The ruling meant minimum wages would rise next year and the paid sick time would also take effect.
