KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Safety officers put out a fire at a home in the 1400 block of West Maple Street Tuesday night and also rescued a dog that was still inside.
Officers were called to the home just before 10:30 p.m. for a call about a garage being on fire and found it had spread to the second floor of the home.
Downed power lines at the back of the home hindered the firefighting efforts from outside, forcing crews to go inside to battle the fire.
The flames also reached the attic and spread throughout that area, prompting them to evacuate the home due to deteriorating conditions and put vent holes in the roof.
One of the two family dogs was still inside and was found alive but suffering from extensive smoke exposure and was rattled by the firefighting activity.
The dog was turned over to the family for care.
