KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A billboard with a bright orange border will be up in Kalamazoo for the next eight weeks to call attention to the state’s new firearm safe storage law.
It is at 1717 Stadium Drive and will also be located soon along I-94 near Sprinkle Road.
The law took effect in February and requires all firearms to be securely stored with a lock in all homes with children. That could either mean a simple cable lock or a more robust gun safe.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller notes guns are the number one cause of death in Michigan for children, and adds “each one of those tragic deaths is completely avoidable.”
Fuller says safe storage is a common sense step that can prevent children from hurting themselves or others with a firearm. He says it’s already something that responsible gun owners have done.
The billboard was sponsored by local gun violence prevention and intervention organizations, including ISAAC, Moms Demand Action, ALPACT, Group Violence Intervention and BLOCKS Club. The billboard directs the public to an informational website developed by End Gun Violence Michigan, www.migunsafety.org.
