KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — A 14-year-old girl who allegedly wrecked a car stolen from a sleeping family friend is facing a list of charges.
Kalamazoo Public Safety got a call from the owner of the vehicle Saturday. It was parked in the 1200 block of California Avenue, which is just west of the Western Michigan University campus. A short time later, officers were dispatched to a report of a collision at Washington and Race Street in the Edison Neighborhood.
The young unlicensed driver had gotten all the way to the other side of town before running a stop sign and colliding with a vehicle driving by a 17-year-old male.
The female suspect and a passenger ran from the crash scene, but were located nearby. She was treated at the scene and taken into custody.
The other driver was not injured.
Police plan to seek several charges against the juvenile, including larceny and fleeing the scene of an accident. The girl also took a cell phone from the sleeping family friend, police said.
