BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM/FM) — Crews have ended a second day of searching in the Kalamazoo River for a car that was seen going into the concrete channel that carries the river through Battle Creek early Saturday morning.
The group believes it may have located the vehicle. A motorist reported seeing it plunge into the river at Dickman near Capital Avenue, smashing through a fence before 5 a.m. Saturday.
A bumper and other debris has been found, and surveillance video at a plant downriver spotted something floating by.
The crew located what they think is the Hyndai SUV using a large magnet at a deep point in the river bottom, where the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers converge. They will be working with towing and recovery firms Monday.
The current is particularly swift right now because of snow melt, making it unsafe for divers.
