WASHINGTON, DC (WKZO AM/FM) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared a disaster in eleven Michigan counties for the sweet cherry crop in 2024.
Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Crawford, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, Otsego, and Wexford counties were impacted.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says around 75% of the sweet cherry crop was lost after a mild winter and a warm and wet start to the season.
That weather made for problems with an invasive fly, and fungi including cherry leaf spot and American brown rot.
