LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clark Lake) said he wanted to make a COVID-19 public service announcement with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, after he and other state Republican lawmakers rejected the notion of creating a law mandating the wearing of masks.
She rejected the notion of the PSA, so he made it with Henry Ford health System’s Dr. Mark Smith. In it, Shirkey says this Thanksgiving should be very different from gatherings in the past.
In the announcement, Shirkey talks about working together to fight the pandemic, and he endorses Dr. Smith’s reminders to wear masks, practice social distancing and limit or cancel Thanksgiving gatherings.
Shirkey shared the video on Twitter and among those amplifying his message by re-tweeting was another Michigan lawmaker, Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, Democrate, assistant minority floor Leader and a microbiologist, who asked, “So does this mean I can expect my Republican colleagues to wear masks on the floor or nah?”
