KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo will hold a celebration on Thursday, October 17 to mark the 5,000th lead service line replacement.
The work has been going on since 2017 and the city has averaged replacing over 500 non-copper water service pipes every year.
The replacement work in the city is funded by the utility rate payers, the state of Michigan’s Drinking Water Revolving Fund, the Kalamazoo Foundation for Excellence, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Kalamazoo’s Public Water Supply System is the largest groundwater-based drinking water system in Michigan and the ground water does not contain lead. Lead, however, can enter drinking water when it is in contact with pipes, solder, interior plumbing, fittings, and fixtures that contain lead.
The celebration will be at the Edison Neighborhood Association at 816 Washington Avenue between Portage and Race streets and will begin at 4 p.m.
A featured dignitary at the community event will be Tom Perez, Senior Advisor to President Joe Biden and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House.
Also attending will be local and state officials as well as city officials including Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson.
Other guests in attendance will be representatives from the Edison Neighborhood Association, and leaders from local and regional health and environmental organizations.
