LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — West Michigan has seen one school district after another have to close down for a day this winter because the flu bug and other viruses has infected a large percentage of their staff and students.
The Michigan State Health Department is firing up a media campaign to get more parents to vaccinate their children, not just from flu, but from a catalog of more serious diseases that could do more than just make them sick.
Health Department Director Eden Wells says Michigan’s young population is vulnerable to a list of communicable diseases like the measles, whooping cough and others.
Dr. Wells says they see new outbreaks of the old diseases every year.
They have put together a number of documents, pamphlets, websites and social media tools to spread the word so they can stop the spread of diseases that should not be around anymore. The campaign will also include radio, TV, print and even billboards.
