GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A man in the U.S. illegally from Mexico had pled guilty to shooting and killing his girlfriend in March in Grand Rapids and dumping her body on the side of US-131.
Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says the case against Brandon Ortiz-Vite is first and foremost a domestic violence case despite his immigration status.
Becker says the family of Ruby Garcia was consulted before he offered Ortiz-Vite the option to plead guilty to second-degree murder.
He says her family supported the plea deal that would prevent holding a trial. Ortiz-Vite will be sentenced to between 30 and 37 years in prison along with two additional years for felony firearm.
Federal authorities will take over his case after he is released on parole no earlier than 2056.
