WASHINGTON, DC (WKZO AM/FM) – The U.S. House of Representatives has voted unanimously to approve a bill to rename the Battle Creek Post Office.
Congressman Bill Huizenga introduced the bill in May to name the post office after abolitionist and civil rights leader Sojourner Truth, and what passed the U.S. House Monday was the bill passed by the U.S. Senate that was sponsored by Michigan Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
Her descendants support the renaming, as do organizations including Kellogg Community College and Battle Creek Unlimited.
The legislation is now headed to President Biden for his signature.
Huizenga issued a statement thanking the Michigan delegation and the entire U.S. House for recognizing “the life, legacy, and impact of Sojourner Truth.” He adds the post office will serve as a symbol of her efforts to abolish slavery, “but also the incredible role the greater Battle Creek community played in the abolition movement and our nation’s history.”
