KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As negotiations continue on new contracts, all three of Western Michigan University’s academic unions last week approved a vote of “no confidence” in university President Edward Montgomery.
The unions represent full-time professors, part-time instructors, and teaching assistants. They say Western Michigan is engaging in anti-union tactics and hasn’t increased wages to keep pace with the cost of living.
According to an online post from the WMU branch of the American Association of University Professors, the vote was a “dramatic expression of long-term dissatisfaction and concern.”
Montgomery, who plans to retire next summer, faced a similar “no confidence” vote at the end of 2021 and came after pandemic-era cutbacks.
A spokesperson for the university declined to comment on the vote.
