LANSING, MI — Riddle Elementary School in Lansing is open today following a shooting near the school on Tuesday afternoon. Lansing Police say two 16-year-olds were shot near the corner of Riddle St. and W. Allegan Street around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.
One of the shooting victims is reported to be in critical condition while the other suffered non-life threatening injuries in the shooting, according to police. They say no arrests have been made in the case.
The shooting took place about a half block from Riddle Elementary School, which was still in session, but at no time were students there in any danger, according to a statement from Lansing Public Schools. Here is the statement in its entirety:
Hello Families,
Thank you for your cooperation this afternoon during dismissal. We appreciate your patience and flexibility in helping us ensure an orderly end to the school day.
As mentioned earlier, an incident occurred in the neighborhood near Riddle Elementary, which prompted the school to implement restricted access.
We want to emphasize that at no point were students or staff in any danger. The restricted access was strictly a precautionary measure. The safety and security of our district, students, and staff are always our top priorities.
