KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city government has set a goal of making their operations carbon neutral by the year 2050.
They took a step in that direction last night by becoming one of the first municipalities on the west side of Michigan to subscribe to a Consumers Energy program to begin using only renewably sourced electricity.
Utilities director James Baker says it will be a big step forward in reducing their carbon footprint.
Consumers Energy representative Ryan Buchinger says it’s the equivalent of 1.9-million gallons of diesel fuel burned each year.
Grand Rapids signed up for the same program just hours before Kalamazoo on Monday, and nine other private firms in Kalamazoo County have already signed up for the program.
It eliminates the need for the city to invest in the solar gear and wind turbines necessary to generate that energy or securing the land to locate those solar gardens.
