KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Work on the Trowbridge Dam on the Kalamazoo River will cause the closing the boat launch at 26th Street beginning this Friday.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials say crews are currently working to change the boat launch space into a staging area for the Kalamazoo River cleanup project. Another staging area is under construction on the north side of 108th Avenue just west of 26th Street.
Trucks are bringing in equipment and materials to both of these areas. EPA says they will put up orange traffic signs up to remind motorists of potentially slow-moving trucks entering/exiting the entrances off 26th Street and 108th Avenue.
Recreational users of the river will be encouraged with signs and warning buoys to exit the river at Pine Creek and/or Fox Mountain/Bittersweet public access areas beginning later this month. There will be no way to pick up canoes or kayaks at the 26th Street boat launch after September 20, and the area is expected to be under construction for the next several years.
