KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Results from the Michigan State Police (MSP) pedestrian safety enforcement week campaign in 11 cities, including Kalamazoo, have been released as of Monday.
The campaign ran from October 15 – 21. The cities were selected due to their high number of pedestrian-related traffic crashes. Law enforcement agencies used the week to focus on changing driver behavior to keep pedestrians safe.
According to the results, numbers in Kalamazoo were recorded by the MSP Fifth District Paw Paw Post, as well as the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
The numbers in Kalamazoo are as follows:
- 16 Motorist Warnings
- 2 Motorist Citations
- 36 Pedestrian Warnings
- 0 Pedestrian Citations
Between the participating agencies across the board, 335 citations were handed out and 318 warnings given, with a majority of citations going to motorists and a majority of the warnings going to pedestrians.
Officers were focusing on drivers making illegal turns, failing to stop at a signal or stop sign before a crosswalk, failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, and blocking a roadway that interferes with the normal flow of traffic.
Officers focused on pedestrians not following traffic control signals, not walking on a sidewalk where provided, and not walking facing traffic when walking on a roadway.
In Michigan, 149 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2019.
