LANSING (WKZO AM /FM) — Legislation that would alter the requirements of the Michigan Merit Curriculum, which is designed to turn out college ready graduates.
Rep. Beth Griffin would like to give the flexibility so some might be redirected toward trade schools. The measures have passed out of a State House committee.
Griffin, a teacher by trade, says the changes give students the option to replace the foreign language requirement with credits in visual arts, career technical education, or computer coding, which is sort of a foreign language.
She says it will do a better job of providing talent for some of the skilled jobs that employers are clamoring to fill these days.
