LANSING (WKZO AM /FM) — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says they know that some young mothers are dying in the first year after they give birth, but they aren’t sure why.
They are calling it “maternal mortality”. Spokesperson Jennifer Eisner says state health officials think about 100 moms die statewide annually in that first critical year, but they don’t really know.
There could be a number of causes, everything from being directly related to the birth to having nothing to do with it at all.
That’s why they are now mandating that such deaths be reported.
Eisner says they will be looking for trends and patterns that might lead to preventative steps.
