EAST LANSING, MI — At Friday morning’s Michigan State University Board of Trustees meeting, board members moved ahead a proposal to start planning a new 4,000 seat sports arena on campus, which they said would make MSU “more competitive in athletics.” The site being considered is on Cherry Lane, south of where the new Student Recreation and Wellness Center is under construction.
There is no cost estimate of the new sports arena or how fundraising might work. Nor was it disclosed what athletic team might play in the new facility. The project is in the early planning stages, according to the board.
Some observers familiar with sports facility management at MSU speculate such a facility could eventually be used for wrestling, gymnastics and perhaps even volleyball. Currently, wrestling and gymnastics compete in Jenison Fieldhouse, which has a spectator capacity of 10,000. Meanwhile, volleyball recently moved to the Breslin Center for its matches. Others speculate that it could be a new indoor pool if the school is considering bringing back its varsity men’s and women’s swimming program.
