DEARBORN (WKZO-AM/FM) — AAA says the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Michigan is up 15 cents to $2.45.
The auto club said that price is about 36 cents more than what was being paid by drivers at this time last year.
Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com said the spike had to happen eventually. He said the start of the upswing was about two months late.
“Refinery maintenance has been fairly uneventful this year and that’s why gas prices haven’t taken off yet,” DeHaan said. “But we’re also transitioning to that more-expensive blend of summer gasoline.”
He also said crude prices are climbing, inching back over $50 a barrel.
“Just a few weeks ago, it had dropped below $47,” DeHaan said. “So, this is really more a story of oil prices.”
The average Monday morning was $2.41 in Kalamazoo and $2.45 in Grand Rapids. It was $2.43 in Lansing.
