KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Gun violence in Kalamazoo is lower than it was last year.
Assistant Public Safety Chief David Juday says the city has gone from 15 homicides at the same time last year to six this year, with five of them from someone being shot.
Juday says it’s a small win, but they need to keep up the work on gun violence reduction strategies that have been implemented.
The Kalamazoo City Commission declared gun violence a public health crisis in 2021.
U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten also launched the Safe Summer 2024 program in Kalamazoo that started on Memorial Day and will end Monday on Labor Day.
