KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — 20-year-old Dionte Burdine of Kalamazoo has been charged with 7 felony counts following his arrest for the shooting death of a man in the 900 block of Church Street Monday evening.
Dead is 22-year-old Bernard Kye.
Witnesses say the killing came after an ongoing feud between families triggered an argument between teens that escalated into a fight between adults and ended with Monday’s shootings.
Detectives say they have surveillance video showing Burdine had a gun that night.
He is being held for open murder, five gun felonies He was also charged with an assault count for allegedly wounding a 40-year-old woman who is expected to recover.
His booking information also shows a criminal sexual conduct count that dates back to early January.
Bond was denied.
Public Safety is now saying that the arrest of a 24-year-old man seen pointing a gun at another man one block north of Monday’s murder scene, may have been an attempt at retaliation for the earlier shooting.
That man was chased down Tuesday afternoon and arrested on a gun charge and home invasion after he broke into a stranger’s home to try and avoid arrest.
Public Safety will be beefing up patrols in the area because of the tension in the neighborhood.
