KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Construction crews in Kalamazoo have unearthed a gravestone from 1838 while doing lead service line maintenance in Westnedge Park this week.
The headstone was for 29-year-old Jonas Ash, who died in Kalamazoo and was buried in what used to be Pioneer Cemetery until 1862.
The cemetery once held about 500 people and Westnedge Park became a historical site in 1960.
City public services director James Baker called it a “wonderful historic discovery” and added the crews were able to complete the replacement of the lead service line through the area.
Baker says they are working to add cemetery procedures to their Miss Dig member lists.
